Debbie asked:

In which philosopher's ethical work can the idea of "the practice of the presence of God" be found?

============

This is the title of a work by Brother Lawrence (c.1610-1691), The Practise of the Presence of God,tr.
John J. Delaney, Image Books, NY, 1977. He I believe made this term famous in our time. But
Self-abandonment to Divine Providenceby Jean-Pierre de Caussade presents the same kind of
understanding. It is a better known and a classic of Christian spiritual writing available in English in
various translations. Also Fenelon's works are good in this regard if you can find them in translation. If
you can get hold of it, The Spiritual Letters of Dom John ChapmanOSB. Fourth Abbot of Downside,
ed. by Dom Roger Hudleston OSB. (Sheed and Ward 1944) is a brilliant intimate view of the subject.
In it he gives instructions for practise of the presence of God to religious, whose job it is to engage
and realise this worthy practise. None of these writers are philosophers in the strict sense — they are
philosophical — so it may not be what you are searching for.
