I propose that "The ultimate value is to preserve and enrich the capacity to value." This allows a
criticism of values which are inimical to human life (since life is a condition necessary to the capacity
to value), and also demands that I respect the capacity of others to pursue all those values they may
articulate for themselves which do not contradict this single ultimate value.
I expect this isn't a new idea (though I haven't encountered it in my reading), and would like to know
where I might find it expressed, and what arguments have been offered against it.
